The scheme was emphasized in the Budget 2024-25 and a provision was made that the government will provide subsidy for the installment of solar panels to 1 crore households.

Under this scheme, subsidy is provided for installing solar panels on the roofs of residential houses to supply electricity to the houses. They will help in saving money on electricity bills by using solar energy for electricity. The central government will provide substantial subsidy and heavily concessional bank loans directly into the bank accounts of the people to ensure that there is no cost burden on the people.

The government subsidy will cover up to 40% of the cost of installation of solar panels. The scheme will help poor and middle-class families to get free solar power and save up to Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000 crore annually by selling the surplus power to power distribution companies.

Rooftop Solar/PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme Installation Process

Photovoltaic panels, also known as rooftop solar panels, are installed on the roofs of homes or buildings and connected to a central power supply unit. This installation reduces dependency on grid-connected power, leading to cost savings.

The entire process is economically sound through net metering, where any excess energy or power produced by the solar panels is sold to the electricity distribution companies at a fair price. Thus, it reduces the overall electricity bills to a great extent by creating a balance between consumption and contribution.
